Sundar Pichai’s Leadership Philosophy: Rewarding Effort Over Outcomes

Recent changes in the management of Google sent shockwaves through the technology world. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the founders of the company, resigned from the leadership of its parent company, Alphabet. Page stepped down as chief executive, while Brin did so as president. A new leader has come aboard to take the company to new heights: Sundar Pichai. But who is this man who rose from a poor Indian family to the most influential levels of the tech world?
Childhood Early Years: Chennai Sundar Pichai Sunder Pichai was born July 12, 1972, in the city of Chennai, India. His family could hardly be said to be even middle-class- his father working as an engineer for a British company, mother a stenographer. At home, his family lived in a small apartment with two rooms. Sunder, along with his brother, lived in the drawing room. At this humble dwelling, Sunder harbored a liking for technology which eventually set him on course for future opportunities.
Family Inspiration: How His Father Sparked a Love for Electronics
Sundar often had conversations with his father, who worked with electronics. These discussions laid the foundation for his interest in technology. “I would come home from work and tell Sundar about what was happening at the office. He was always interested,” recalls his father, Regunatha Pichai.
When Sundar turned 12, his father brought home the family’s very first rotary dial phone. Sundar was fascinated and memorized all of the numbers they dialed; soon his mathematics skills became unusually good-skills that would later be recognized at Google.
Education: From India to Stanford
Sundar had completed his schooling in Chennai and attended IIT in Kharagpur, topping in the institution. He graduated in 1993 as a Metallurgical Engineer with a silver medal for excellence. It is during University time that Sundar’s interest in electronics first appeared, he studied extra classes took extra classes worked with silicon wafers doing different projects.
Although he was asked to go further in graduate school, Sundar chose to major in Material Science for his master’s and took an MBA admission in Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania respectively. He got a scholarship, too, when his family did not have sufficient money to allow him to pursue studies in the U.S. Career Before Google: From McKinsey to Google

Sundar had started his career at McKinsey and Applied Materials, but in 2004 he had joined Google as a president of product management. He was supposed to develop products like Google Toolbar and Google Chrome. Chrome became a breakthrough and drastically changed the look of the internet.
It was Sundar who convinced the leadership to develop a browser of their own against the will of Eric Schmidt, Google’s then-CEO. Chrome turned out to be an instant hit, and it expanded the user base of Google dramatically. This opened new horizons for the company and led to successful projects such as Chrome OS and Chromebooks.

With the success of Chrome, Sundar took over as Vice President; later, in 2012, he became Senior Vice President, running products such as Gmail and Android. In 2013, after Andy Rubin stepped down from the Android project, Sundar took over as the leader.
His diplomacy and the ability to unlock his employees’ potential made him a valuable leader. He fostered a culture of collaboration and openness, in contrast to the more rigid management styles in other large companies.
Google Today: What's Next?
Today, Google continues to change the world by developing technologies that are accessible to all. At the annual Google I/O conference, Sundar Pichai announced dozens of new projects aimed at making that happen. The company tries to deploy technology as a tool for equalizing opportunities-from access to resources that children in rural areas can have, all the way to university professors.
A Path to the Top
The story of Sundar Pichai is not about poverty to success; it’s an inspiring tale of how perseverance, passion, and staying true to one’s beliefs can change the world. Sundar has become a symbol of how an ordinary boy from India can transform into the leader of a global tech empire, impacting the future of all humanity.
