Being a good citizen means actively engaging in one’s community, respecting the rights and obligations of others, observing laws, and being constructive toward society at large. It includes a spirit of civic duty and responsibility.

In order to understand the foundations of democracy, how government is structured and what our rights as individuals are, civic education plays a crucial role. An enlightened citizenry can more actively participate in the civic life, act rationally and raise concerns for positive changes.

To be a “good citizen” means creating an open, pluralistic society. It means accepting and respecting people’s differences, fighting discrimination against them in order to promote equal opportunities for all. Working with those of different backgrounds promotes a more harmonious and tolerant society.

The right to vote is an important part of citizenship. Participation in elections gives citizens first-hand experience of shaping the government and policies that influence them. Knowing one is a responsible citizen means being an enlightened voter and encouraging others to enter the democratic process.

Participating in your community involves undertaking beneficial activities for others. This means volunteering, taking part in local activities, promoting the interests of lying businesses and also doing your bit for conservation. Looking for means to improve the community creates a feeling of shared responsibility.
